Cancer Camp Funds Sought
A motorcycle ride to raise funds for One Step at a Time, a Lake Geneva, WI camp for children with cancer, will kick off at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The ride will start at Duke's Drive-In, 8115 S. Harlem Ave., Bridgeview. Motorcyclists should gather about 8:00 a.m. at the restaurant for the ride to the Wisconsin camp.
Made up of back roads, the route is about 130 miles in each direction. A presentation to camp administrators and an after-ride party for motorcyclists will take place at Skinny's South Shore in Lake Geneva.
Each interested motorcyclist has been asked to get pledges for the event. Organizers Bill Humphrey and Kevin O'Meara hope to raise about $15,000. O'Meara previously organized the Ugly Run, a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis.

Big Bikes Helping Little Tykes
Motorcyclists Hit the Road for One Step At A Time Campers
On July 19, 2003 more than 100 bikers rode about 140 miles from Bridgeview, on the south side of Chicago, to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, to raise $5,500 from pledges. The money was donated to One Step At A Time summer camp.
The ride for charity began at Dukes Drive-In, a fast food restaurant owned by Bill and Sue Humphrey, two organizers of the event, Bill, a Chicago firefighter, says he found out about summer camp about eight years ago when he volunteered to take a group of campers out on his boat for the camp's annual "Boat Day." The Humphreys have a home on Lake Geneva.
"I never forget about the kids or the camp," recalls Bill. "When my friend, Kevin O'Meara, wanted to do a charity run for a good cause, I suggested One Step at a Time."
Several Harley owners groups were represented in the four-hour ride aptly named, "Big Bikes Helping Little Tykes." The ride culminated at Skinny's South Shore bar and restaurant in Lake Geneva, where the bikers were warmly greeted by a group of camp counselors.
"It was a wonderful feeling to know the money we raised was going directly to help the camp and the kids," said Bill.
Besides obtaining pledges prior to the bike ride, participants sold items such as T-shirts and foam beverage coolers with the camp's logo on them. An original painting of two motorcycles with the camp logo and the "big bikes" slogan was auctioned off. Camp volunteer Tom Tiry took it home with the highest bid.
"We sold a lot of T-shirts and have some left over for next year," says Kevin, who adds: "I knew Bill wanted to help out because he loves the concept of the camp where kids with cancer can just have fun for a week or two."
Kevin and his wife, Cindy, know first-hand what it feels like to be told you have cancer. Kevin was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999. While he was in treatment he saw an ad for One Step at a Time camp. Today, Kevin is in remission and back to work.
"We're going to do this again next year," he promises. "Our goal is to bring in more money. We like the camp and are happy to help."
Bill too is optimistic that the next bike-a-thon will be bigger and better.
"We're hoping to hit $10,000 next year," he says enthusiastically. "I feel fabulous that the money we raised will go to the camp for the kids." July 19th, 2004, we raised $12,500.00 for the camp,we hope this year will top last years total. Please come out for the ride and see how excited the kids are when we all ride into camp!! There is no better feeling in the world, seeing first hand where all our efforts go, when you visit with the campers and have lunch with them. The feeling is overwhelming! July 16th 2005 Together with your help we raised $26,500.00.Thank you all!! Another great year 2007,we raised over $28,000 Thanks everyone!!
